To fight proposed homeless shelters in Glendale and Ozone Park, one candidate for state senate is taking his opposition to the ballot — but not as a referendum or ballot question.

Slawomir Platta has collected nearly 2,000 of the 3,000 necessary signatures to appear on the ballot as a candidate for the “No Homeless Shelter” party in the race for Senate District 15, a seat occupied by Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr., a Democrat.

“I oppose the de Blasio-style of homeless shelters being introduced in this community,” Platta told the New York Post.

Platta, an attorney, also seeks the Republican nomination. He is the first Polish-American to run for State Senate.

A Department of Homeless Services proposal to develop a 113-bed shelter for homeless men with mental illness in Ozone Park has met fierce opposition by Ozone Park residents, including one who went on a hunger strike.

Another site in Glendale has also encountered criticism from residents of Community District 5, a part of which overlaps with Senate District 15.
